Commercial law firm Stephen Gateley & Sons was founded in Birmingham in the 19th century to help forward thinking Victorian’s prosper. Many years later in the 1970s, Gateley joined forces with Bernard Wareing to launch Gateley Wareing & Co starting the growth of our legal services group.
A lot has changed for our business since then – the way we work, where we work and who we work with. Our clients have changed and we have moved with them. We work with clients from start-ups and SMEs through to large corporates and public sector organisations.
What has stayed the same has been our focus on helping our clients to thrive and prosper. That commercial, entrepreneurial spirit goes to the heart of our business and shapes our story.
Opened offices in the East Midlands.
Merged with Scottish firm Henderson Boyd Jackson to become HBJ Gateley Wareing with a further two offices in Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Achieved Lexcel accreditation for Law Society’s Practice Management Standards; merged with London firm Shaw and Croft; opened London office.
Merged with London firm Holmes Hardingham; opened our first international office in Dubai.
HBJ Gateley Wareing LLP acquired the Manchester commercial practice of Halliwells LLP and we opened a Manchester office.
On 1 May the firm rebranded as Gateley LLP with a combined practice of 750 employees including 145 partners and 300 lawyers. Annual turnover reaches £63m.
Opened our Leeds office.
We became the UK’s first publicly quoted commercial law firm following our admission to trading on the AIM market of the London Stock Exchange.
Acquisitions of Capitus Ltd and Hamer Associates. Opened Belfast and Reading offices.
Staff sharesave scheme introduced allowing all staff to save and acquire shares in the business.
Acquired GCL Solicitors LLP (specialists in legal advice on residential developments), Kiddy & Partners (business psychologists) and International Investment Services (international expansion experts).
Gateley named UK Law Firm of the Year at the British Legal Awards and celebrated 30 years of consecutive financial growth. Acquired Persona Associates (land referencing experts) and t-three (leadership development specialists).
Acquired Tweed Law (brand and reputation management experts) and The Vinden Partnership Ltd (corporate advisory, dispute resolution and consultants to the built environment).
Gateley named Professional Services Firm of the Year at the 2021 Birmingham Business Post Awards. Acquired Tozer Gallagher (quantity surveyors and construction consultants). Opened Newcastle office.
Acquired Adamson Jones Holdings Ltd (experts in international patent, design and trade mark protection advice), Smithers Purslow Ltd (multi-disciplinary chartered surveying practice) and Symbiosis (chartered patent attorney firm).
Acquired RJA Consultants Ltd (built environment consultants specialising in the affordable housing sector). Gateley Tweed begins to trade as Gateley Legal in Northern Ireland, reflecting the growth and diversification of the Belfast office.
Established our class actions practice, Austen Hays, and launched our first claim in February 2024.
Based in Dubai, UAE, Gateley Middle East is launched, building on our existing presence in the region.
